Questo ci insegna la filosofia: pur sapendo bene che l'amore «è sopra ogni cosa» ed è persino alle radici della filosofia stessa.
Grazie all'Eros povero e scalzo impersonato dal più grande e atipico dei maestri, Socrate, la filosofia ci insegna ad amare, ma non troppo. Ovvero, ci invita ad amare, e in definitiva a vivere, facendo un buon uso delle nostre passioni e dei nostri piaceri senza lasciarci trascinare dagli eccessi dell'innamoramento, una delle poche follie che godono di un'ampia legittimazione sociale. Per far questo, e per vivere bene, abbiamo bisogno di un'etica che dell'amore ci faccia evitare i fanatismi e i picchi totalizzanti di entusiasmo.
L'amore, ha scritto Ovidio, è come andare «per la prima volta soldato in una terra sconosciuta», ma a ben vedere ciò è vero per tutta la nostra vita morale e per i dilemmi che quotidianamente ci pone il nostro rapporto con gli altri che, proprio come l'amore, diceva Sartre, può trasformarsi in un inferno. Armando Massarenti, attingendo alla sapienza classica e moderna – da Platone a Ovidio, da Wittgenstein a Iris Murdoch – ma anche a spunti provenienti dalle neuroscienze, coniuga filosofia, logica ed epistemologia al fine di proporre al lettore una bussola per orientarsi in quella terra sconosciuta.
Una filosofia pratica in grado di regalarci un bene prezioso: la possibilità concreta di stare bene con gli altri.
