Nel bene e nel male, c’è chi – come Karl Popper – ha visto nel progetto politico platonico l’archetipo di ogni totalitarismo (nazismo, comunismo...) e invece chi – come Hans-Georg Gadamer – vi ha scorto l’ideale di una teologia politica ispirata alla giustizia. Nelle pagine di questo intramontabile scritto batte in effetti il cuore di un progetto di rinnovamento della polis, centrato sulla possibilità di un governo di filosofi: nella prospettiva di Platone, infatti, solo i filosofi, opportunamente educati e condotti fino alla conoscenza abbagliante del Bene e del Vero, possono essere in grado di amministrare in modo pienamente razionale la polis.
Di qui l’esigenza – il filo rosso del testo platonico – di costruire una nuova paideia (contro l’antica educazione greca basata sui modelli omerici) e di pensare il “paradigma in cielo” della città-giusta, della kallipolis, in una felice e feconda convergenza di u-topia ed eu-topia in cui Atene, Sparta e Siracusa non siano storicamente destinate alla guerra fratricida, ma possano convivere e collaborare idealmente in armoniosa concordia. Nel saggio introduttivo e nel saggio integrativo, Giovanni Reale presenta la sua nuova interpretazione dei passaggi metafisici fondamentali del testo alla luce delle dottrine non scritte, spiegando come per Platone la vera conoscenza del Bene, che nello scritto è presentata allusivamente tramite l’immagine del Sole, si possa raggiungere pienamente solo nella dimensione dell’oralità dialettica, e quindi (per noi lettori) solo con l’ausilio delle testimonianze indirette su ciò che Platone non solo scriveva, ma anche insegnava nella sua Accademia.
